Of all gemstones Diamond is the most highly valued and prized possession of modern times . The facts and figures about diamonds are well known so we will not go into too much detail in these pages, we will however show you some stunning creations from Jewellery By Design own vaults.

While there is a lot of interest in coloured diamonds at the moment , indeed Jewellery By Design stocks fine pink , canary yellow , champagne and other coloured diamonds , we will concentrate here on fine white stones and unique designs that show them off in their full glory.

At the Speed of Light

Light travels through Diamond at a relatively slow 78,000 miles per second , or a refractive index of 2.4 as opposed to say 1.5 for quartz it is this refractive quality that gives Diamond the dazzling display of Fire , that when properly designed and set brings you stunning examples of beautiful jewellery like the 1.25 ct Diamond ring opposite designed and hand made at Jewellery By Design.

Unconquerable.

Or Adamas is the Greek source of Diamonds name , and Diamond has stayed unconquerable as the king of gems for centuries. The ring opposite is reason enough to justify this status. The right setting.

Whilst it is important to have the right stone , any diamond however beautiful will only display its true fire if it is correctly set. Many jewellers use 'off the shelf' castings often of poor quality almost always too thin and rarely reflecting the needs of the individual stone. At Jewellery By Design , when we do use a casting we make the initial master mould ourselves - ensuring quality , strength and individuality. This ensures that each and every Diamond or gemstone is displayed to its full advantage.

Dare to be Square !

Diamonds are cut into many different shapes , the round brilliant cut being perhaps the most popular. Another popular cut is the square 'princess' cut. The round brilliant cut has been developed to display the Fire of a Diamond to its full potential however a properly cut princess cut stone burns almost as brightly. The ring opposite contains nine princess cut stones invisibly set , producing an incredible display of light and fire which can not be reproduced on film , it is a ring which needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.

The cutting edge

Popular cuts are pear or teardrop shapes, hearts , trilliants (triangular)and some of the more unusual cuts such as the Lily© cut . You may have Diamonds of your own , unset or in existing jewellery , bring it in to Jewellery By Design for advice on how best to reuse your existing jewellery. If you have Diamonds that are badly cut or scratched Jewellery By Design can arrange re-cutting and polishing of suitable stones.

4th finger left hand ?

The diamond ring was regarded by the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt as a symbol of eternity. But why must the diamond ring be worn on the forth finger of the left hand ? the ancient Egyptians believed the "love pulse" comes from the heart and beats through this finger! This is one of many stories from around the world , perhaps one or all are true either way the Diamond ring is and always will be the symbol of true and eternal love.

Platinum

For a long time platinum was the metal of choice for wedding and engagement rings, the second world war brought about rationing of certain materials. Platinum's strength made it invaluable for military purposes and white or yellow gold soon took its place. Whilst gold is now the metal of choice for most jewellery today , platinum is still sought after by discerning jewellery buyers. The ring opposite utilises Gold and Platinum the perfect setting for another unique Jewellery By Design creation.

When size matters.

Most people think of one carat (a fifth of one gram) to be the perfect size stone , this again is a matter of personal preference. A smaller diamond of good colour and clarity can be worth much more than an appreciably larger Diamond of lower colour or clarity. Some people prefer smaller cleaner stones , and some prefer larger stones with a compromise in the colour or clarity of the Diamond... they are both right !
